Want To Win A FREE 3-Night Stay At A Mountain Retreat?
Have you ever been out to the East end of Southern California? I mean, past Palm Springs, and even past Coachella Valley. Now that the music festivals Coachella and Stagecoach have been going on for a quite a few years, more and more people find themselves coming out to the Palm Desert, La Quinta, Indio, and Coachella Valley area. Well, for those of you that like to do more than party while you are out here, there is one place you can venture off to that isn’t too far from the festival itself.
Salvation Mountain is a small mountain that has been built up more and more and painted into a huge art piece by Leonard Knight. It encompasses a multitude of murals and Bible and religious phrases throughout the mountain. Leonard, along with other friends and artists built much of this sculpture with wood, adobe, straw, and thousands of gallons of paint. Lead free of course.
As you can see in the photos, Salvation Mountain is quite the site. In fact, after hearing about it, it gathered my interest and I decided that I would have to go check it out one day. Little did I know, there would actually be lots of people there visiting and touring themselves around, just like me. It wasn’t overly crowded, which allowed me to get some really great photos of the art without too many people covering spots.
The drive out there is really easy too, you basically just take 1 road all the way there, until you have to make 1 turn. Of course, this depends on where you are coming from, but it will be nearly that easy no matter where you are coming from, since it is just off Hwy 111, which is basically like the longest road out there.
Since it is out in the desert though, I do recommend going during daylight times and bringing a friend or two with you. Not that I got the vibe that something would happen, it is just always safe to travel to remote places in groups. It just so happens that this specific remote location is surrounded by trailers, tents, and other people who I would like to call, Gypsies. Maybe they are, maybe not. But that’s what I’m going with.
Things to bring:
- Defintely Sunblock! You are out in the open so even in Winter it is a good idea to keep that SPF slathered on!!
- A hat
- DON’t forget your camera! As you can see there are a ton of picture opportunities
- Sunglasses… it gets windy out there year round so glasses will protect you from the (light) sand storms.
- Water – the closest convenient store is a ways down so best to bring some h2o with ya!
Anyways, if you’re in the area and want to take a little adventure, want to get some cool pictures, or fancy yourself an other-than-average art show, head out to Salvation Mountain. If you do go, or even if you’ve been in the past, comment below with your thoughts. And don’t forget to subscribe for more great content! Thanks for reading.
Have a beachin’ day!
